Geoff Bishop
Geoff Bishop (2024) – Still driving and enjoying life.
Geoff Bishop was born in September 1946 and grew up in Darlington, Western Australia. Long before he became known as a respected transport operator, he was simply a young man who wasn’t afraid of hard work. After completing an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner and spending time working on farms and machinery, Geoff found his way into trucking.
At 20 years of age, Geoff obtained his truck licence and began driving throughout Western Australia. It was a vastly different industry to the one we know today. Many roads were still dirt, breakdowns were common, and two-up drivers often slept on a wire bed mounted behind the cab. The work was tough, the distances were long, and there was nobody to call when things went wrong.
Those early years taught Geoff lessons that stayed with him for life. Trucking wasn’t just about driving. You had to look after your load, your customer and your truck. If the freight didn’t arrive safely, you didn’t get paid. If you didn’t look after your customers, they wouldn’t call you back. It was an era built on trust, hard work and reputation, where a handshake was often all that was needed to secure a job.

One of Geoff’s most memorable experiences involved transporting explosives through remote Western Australia. When part of the load caught fire, he quickly unhooked trailers, unloaded burning bags of explosives by hand and fought the blaze with the limited water he had available. It was the kind of challenge many drivers of his generation faced, relying on judgement and determination in some of the country’s most isolated regions.
In 1974, Geoff purchased his first truck and became an owner-driver. It was the beginning of what would become Bishops Transport. The purchase was only possible because his parents mortgaged their home to help him; Geoff has never forgotten that act of faith and support.
From that single truck, Geoff spent years travelling between Western Australia and the eastern states, often covering more than 250,000 kilometres a year. He still talks fondly about the people, the friendships and the camaraderie among drivers. It was a time when truck drivers looked after each other, helped mates in trouble and took pride in getting the job done.
Over more than five decades, Geoff steadily built Bishops Transport from a one-truck operation into one of the most respected transport businesses in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Geoff is quick to acknowledge the contribution of his son Cameron, whose leadership and investment helped drive the next phase of growth. Together they built a business that today employs more than 250 people, with 14 depots servicing some of Australia’s most remote regions.
Despite that growth, Geoff has remained remarkably grounded. He still enjoys driving interstate both East and North and remains an intrinsic part of the company. Those who know Geoff describe him as hardworking, loyal, fair and dependable. He has always valued the people who helped him along the way and continues to support many of the same suppliers and tradespeople who have worked with him for decades.
Looking back, Geoff reflects most fondly on the friendships made, the roads travelled and the opportunities the industry has provided for his family.
As a veteran of the dirt road days with 60 years’ experience, Geoff Bishop represents a generation of Australian truck drivers who helped build the nation one load at a time—through hard work, resilience, loyalty and an unwavering commitment to getting the job done.
